Bethlehem - (The House of Bread) attracts pilgrims worldwide on account of its description in the New Testament as the birthplace of Jesus. The Church of the Nativity, one of the oldest churches in the world, is the focus of Christian veneration within the city.
Most visitors come to Bethlehem with a preconceived image – a small stone village, a manger and shepherds in their fields – thanks to memories of a childhood nativity, perhaps, or years of scenic Christmas cards.
The reality is quite different. Bethlehem positively hums with activity, its winding streets congested with traffic and its main square filled with snap-happy tourists scrambling to keep up with their guides.
Churches now cover many of the holy sites but there is plenty to see and do for even the non-religious. There’s a lively Old City and bazaar, plus sites around town including the incredible Herodium, Mar Saba Monastery, Rachel's Tomb and Solomon's Pools.
